Florence University of the Arts - Fashion in Italy Program

The study abroad summer program through Johnson & Wales University, hosted by Florence University of the Arts, offered a unique opportunity to immerse myself in the world of Italian fashion. The program provided invaluable insights into various aspects of the fashion industry, including marketing, business management, supply chain, and sourcing, all from an international perspective. This experience allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the inner workings of fashion in Italy and broaden my professional knowledge in a global context.

Visits to Fashion Houses

During my study abroad program in Italy, I had the incredible opportunity to visit iconic fashion houses such as Gucci and Ferragamo. These visits offered an intimate look at the evolution of Italian fashion, from timeless craftsmanship to cutting-edge design. Observing the creative process and the meticulous attention to detail that defines these luxury brands deepened my appreciation for the artistry and innovation that shape global fashion trends. It was an unforgettable experience that enriched my understanding of style and its cultural significance.

Connecting with Fellow Fashion Students

I was able to connect with fellow Johnson & Wales fashion students who, like me, are striving to build careers in the fashion industry. Through this experience, I gained insight into the shared passion that unites us, as well as the diverse specialties that make each of us unique. Additionally, one of our classes brought together fashion students from universities across the country, allowing us to exchange ideas, learn from each other, and expand our networks. This program not only strengthened my connections within Johnson & Wales but also broadened my perspective on the industry as a whole.

Fully Immersing Myself into the Culture

I fully immersed myself in the rich Italian culture, which holds a deep personal significance for me. My entire family is Italian, and my great-grandmothers immigrated to the United States from Italy in the early 1900s. Exploring bustling local markets, sampling regional specialties like fresh pasta and handmade gelato, and engaging in lively conversations with locals at cafés allowed me to connect with my heritage. Attending community festivals and historical tours deepened my appreciation for Italy’s vibrant traditions, art, and architecture, making the experience even more meaningful.

Witnessing the Production Process of Luxury Goods

I got the chance to visit production factories for some big-name luxury brands, including Il Borgo Cashmere. It was amazing to see how the supply chain works—starting with sourcing high-quality materials like wool and ending with the incredible craftsmanship that turns them into sweaters worth thousands of dollars. Seeing the whole process up close gave me a real appreciation for the skill, detail, and creativity that go into luxury fashion.
